History of Glacier

Glacier originally began as a site for gold mining, coal mining and logging. Although initial numbers were few and transportation was difficult on such rugged terrain, strong commercial influence drove rapid residential growth. The growth of tourism is reflected in the growth of roads and improvement in transportation. Glacier’s newfound popularity attracted the interest of the Bellingham Bay and British Columbia Railroad. Consequently, a railroad stop was established in 1904. The area became public after the creation of the Mount Baker Highway in 1923. In 1906, the town site became part of the National Forest. As a result, prior-established homesteaders received deeds to their lands and mining claims.

A pristine gated community nestled into the natural landscape of the Mt. Baker area. Snowline is intimately acquainted with the Nooksack River and Mt. Baker, all while being just a short drive from Bellingham. It is the perfect getaway location for enthusiasts of the great outdoors. The Snowline community commits to providing a residential community with plenty of family oriented recreation. The community upholds a rich community history closely intertwined with the neighboring national forest. Indulging in the environment’s bountiful recreational activities is one of the great pleasures of the area.

The community of Glacier began as a small settlement at the edge of the Mount Baker forest. Henceforth, it served as a service center for the remote logging, mining, and agricultural districts in the vicinity. Although settlers were few, and transportation difficult in the Mountainous terrain, Glacier did seem to offer a promise of prosperity. Eventually, the area began to attract an increasing number of outdoors enthusiasts and tourists. They arrived at turn of the century, lured by the recreational opportunities of the Mount Baker vicinity.

With Snowline exclusive access to the wealth of recreational amenities within walking distance, there is always a variety of convenient activities for the whole family to enjoy! Snowline features a wealth of outdoor amenities, such as a swimming pool, basketball and tennis courts, multipurpose field, fishing pond, and plenty of hiking trails nearby. Spend a relaxing day out on the nearby local Shuksan or North Bellingham Golf course, grab a bite to eat at Glacier’s Chair 9 or Graham’s Restaurant (both feature live music on weekends). On a larger scale, take advantage of the gorgeous Mt. Baker landscape with some excellent hikes in the summer, or world-class skiing in the winter.

General Directions

  • Take I-5 to exit 255 in Bellingham (WA-542: Mt. Baker Hwy)
  • Go east on HWY-542 for 34.5 miles
  • Snowline is on the left (start watching after you pass the small town of Glacier)

GATED COMMUNITY: In order to enter Snowline you’ll need a cardkey or use the keypad at the gate to call a house/cabin if you know the last name of the owner. When the phone rings the person answering can talk to you over the intercom and must press the ‘9’ key on the phone to automatically open the gate.

NO WIRELESS COVERAGE: Due to the remote location, wireless phones do NOT work in Glacier and stop working near mile marker 20 on HWY-542 (depending on provider); make sure and coordinate with your party prior to losing wireless coverage.
