History of Glacier

Glacier originally began as a site for gold mining, coal mining and logging. Although initial numbers were few and transportation was difficult on such rugged terrain, strong commercial influence drove rapid residential growth. The growth of tourism is reflected in the growth of roads and improvement in transportation. Glacier’s newfound popularity attracted the interest of the Bellingham Bay and British Columbia Railroad. Consequently, a railroad stop was established in 1904. The area became public after the creation of the Mount Baker Highway in 1923. In 1906, the town site became part of the National Forest. As a result, prior-established homesteaders received deeds to their lands and mining claims.

GATED COMMUNITY: In order to enter Snowline you’ll need a cardkey or use the keypad at the gate to call a house/cabin if you know the last name of the owner. When the phone rings the person answering can talk to you over the intercom and must press the ‘9’ key on the phone to automatically open the gate.

NO WIRELESS COVERAGE: Due to the remote location, wireless phones do NOT work in Glacier and stop working near mile marker 20 on HWY-542 (depending on provider); make sure and coordinate with your party prior to losing wireless coverage.
