Glacier originally began as a site for gold mining, coal mining and logging. Although initial numbers were few and transportation was difficult on such rugged terrain, strong commercial influence drove rapid residential growth. The growth of tourism is reflected in the growth of roads and improvement in transportation. Glacier’s newfound popularity attracted the interest of the Bellingham Bay and British Columbia Railroad. Consequently, a railroad stop was established in 1904. The area became public after the creation of the Mount Baker Highway in 1923. In 1906, the town site became part of the National Forest. As a result, prior-established homesteaders received deeds to their lands and mining claims.

History of Maple Falls

Just twenty-six miles from Bellingham on the Mount Baker Highway, the quaint town of Maple Falls rests peacefully. The town was originally founded 1889 when early homesteader George Albert King and his wife, Caroline, settled near the crossroads of what is now Silver Lake Road and the Mount Baker gold trail. When King allotted ten acres of land for a town site, the community immediately saw rapid population. With remnant prospectors of the dwindling Mount Baker Gold Rush, in search of new opportunities for work. Maple Falls quickly became a center of logging and milling activity in the Pacific Northwest, establishing itself as an important railroad stop in a booming local lumber business. At one point in time, Maple Falls was on its way to becoming the next bustling metropolis of the Pacific Northwest. However, in 1924,misfortune struck when the railroad raised the cost of shipping timber to the market. This caused several lumber companies in the area to die out. Maple Falls never realized its full potential as an economic hotspot, but it leaves behind stories, memories, and artifacts of a vibrant and colorful piece of Washington history.

Today, Maple Falls exists as a small, tranquil community, tucked snugly into the folds of the scenic Mount Baker landscape.
